Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs Resources

Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs):

Review of ASP Indicators and Resource Recommendations

As part of the 2018 WISH LHSN Report, this review presents indicators used to evaluate ASPs, as provided by diverse organizations and public health bodies. This review offers:

  • A compilation of 83 indicators

  • Indicator references

  • A list of resources recommending each specific indicator.

The type of indicators that were considered included:

  • Structure indicators (29) that assess prerequisites for and organizational components of an effective antibiotic stewardship (ABS) program in hospitals (25)

  • Process indicators (35) that measure prescription practice (8) and appropriateness of antibiotic use in the treatment of all bacterial infections in hospitalized adult patients (12)

  • Outcome indicators (19) that attempt to determine whether the program has had any impact on the mortality patients in relation to infectious diseases, how the activities have changed the resistance patterns of  antimicrobial resistance organisms and also influenced the consumption of antimicrobials.

This resource presents references from current checklists, and seeks to build an evaluation framework applicable across resource-rich and resource-limited contexts.
